how it all started

At 27, James joined the Army and served for eleven years in the 82nd Airborne Division. From 2007 to 2011, he was part of the Special Troops Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. After retiring in 2014, James transitioned to civilian life by becoming a truck driver for a major carrier.

In 2018 James was nominated for Veteran Rookie Truck Driver of the Year with FASTPORT and was selected as a semi-finalist. Soon after that his name appeared again as a contender for the Progressive Insurance Keys to Progress commercial vehicle give-away program. He made history as the first-ever commercial truck recipient with this program, marking the beginning of Spartan Direct. Spartan Direct is named after the platoon of soliders James served with in Afghanistan, the Spartans.

Spartan Direct's growth began in 2019 when James added his second truck and hired his first driver.

Spartan Direct started as a dry van carrier, but in 2023, the company transitioned to a refrigerated fleet specializing in fresh and frozen food.

Spartan Direct has expanded to a fleet of 13 trucks, with a strong team of company drivers and leased owner-operators. Our focus is on hiring military veterans and we are eager to see what the future holds in 2025 and beyond!
